“Revenge porn” king Hunter Moore indicted by US Attorney

January 23, 2014

Hunter Moore

He was once dubbed by Rolling Stone, “the most hated man on the internet.” If you’ve never heard of him before, he is 27-year-old Hunter Moore, the creator of a “revenge porn” website that was up and running from 2009 – 2012. The site, Is Anyone Up? (isanyoneup.com), featured nude pictures and videos of real men and women, submitted by other individuals, with links to their Facebook and/or Twitter accounts.

The problem is, many people who were featured on the site claimed that their photos and videos had been illegally stolen from them. And judging from the 15-count indictment handed down today, it seems as though they were right.

Moore and his alleged accomplice, 25-year-old Charles “Gary” Evens, are being charged with conspiracy, seven counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information, and seven counts of aggravated identity theft.

From the indictment:

Beginning on an unknown date and continuing through on or about May 2, 2012, in Los Angeles County, within the Central District of California, and elsewhere, defendants Moore and Evens, together with others known and unknown to the Grand Jury, knowingly combined, conspired, and agreed to commit the following offense against the United States: To access a protected computer without authorization to obtain information for private financial gain, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1030 (a)(2)(C), (c)(2)(B)(i).

The indictment goes on to detail several specific instances in which Moore emailed Evens to ask him to illegally hack into email accounts in order to gain access to nude photos and/or videos for the website. They communicated via their emails about the scheme on several occasions, and Evens would send Moore the pictures in exchange for payment.

Both Moore and Evens are due in court Tuesday afternoon. Moore will appear in federal court in Sacramento and Evens will appear in U.S. district court in Los Angeles.

On an ironic note, shortly after news of Justin Bieber’s DUI arrest broke this morning, Hunter tweeted,

“@justinbieber I’m comin to bust you out…”
