A beloved Brooklyn pizzeria owner was shot and killed outside of his home last night and now a manhunt is underway for his killer.
NYPD officers were called to a home at 7601 12th Avenue in the Dyker Heights neighborhood just after 7 PM last night and found 61-year-old Louis Barbati in the yard near the door of his home. Barbati, co-owner of the L&B Spumoni Gardens pizzeria, had been shot multiple times in the back torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Barbati’s wife and two sons were reportedly inside of the home when the shooting occurred.
From The NY Times:
Donna Padmore, 56, of East New York, a home health aide who works across the street from Mr. Barbati’s home, said she heard three or four shots. She said she heard Mr. Barbati’s wife screaming, “He got shot! He got shot!”
Then, she said, she saw neighbors rushing to the home, where at least one bullet hole and two nicks in the white fence were visible late Thursday night.
Police told reporters that they have witnesses who saw a white male in his 30s with a hoodie on run westbound on 76th Street towards 11th Avenue.
Early this morning, police were reportedly searching a white Lexus parked in front of a fire hydrant down the block from Barbati’s home. No word yet on if it’s connected to the murder.
Police were also searching for security video footage in the neighborhood.
L&B Spumoni Gardens is a popular Brooklyn pizzeria that has been in the Barbati family for four generations.
The Barbati family posted a statement to the Spumoni Gardens Facebook Page:
It’s way too soon to speculate, but it doesn’t sound like an attempted robbery. So who could have wanted this man dead?
I’ll post any updates here.
UPDATE: 7/5/16 9:34 AM
Multiple sources are reporting that Barbati had $15,000 cash on him when he was shot, which the shooter did not take.
From The NY Post:
The co-owner of L&B Spumoni Gardens pizzeria was bringing home $15,000 when he was gunned down during an apparent botched robbery — and screamed out for his wife as he lay dying, police sources said Friday.
Louis Barbati, 61, still had the cash — and a loaf of Italian bread — when his wife found him riddled with bullets outside his house on 12th Avenue in Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights.
Over the weekend, Barbati was laid to rest with hundreds of people paying their respects. The service is expected to continue today.
Barbati’s family is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible. Any tips should be reported to Crimestoppers at 877-577-TIPS.
