A New York man who left his job in finance to travel the world has gone missing during a marathon motorcycle ride through Mexico.
From News 12 Westchester:
Harry Devert, 32, was on a motorcycle trip in southern Mexico and was last heard from via text message on Jan. 25. He told his girlfriend he would be meeting up with a military escort through a rural town in a dangerous area of the country. No one has heard from him since. His phone is no longer in service and his bank account hasn’t had any activity.
According to a Facebook page set up by his friends and family, the last text to his girlfriend Sarah read:
“Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be. Stopping for lunch and … voila Internet. … Gonna get back on the road soon. Apparently there’s another military escort waiting for me in some other town… I’m running way late because of the crazy military stuff…hopefully get a chance to talk to you tonight when I (hopefully) finally arrive.”
His family says he was traveling to the Zihuatanejo beach that was the backdrop for the last scene in Shawshank redemption.
Harry Devert was extremely adventurous, to say the least. One look at his blog, A New Yorker Travels, and you can see that he has indeed traveled the world and seen things some of us can only imagine. Is this just another adventure of his, or is his life really in danger this time?
Harry’s mother told reporters that she last heard from her son on January 23. The phone connection wasn’t good, and he told her he’d be out of cell phone and Internet range for the next few days. She hasn’t heard from him since, and his debit card has not been used. His phone is also no longer in service.
Harry is 6’0, 185 lbs, and has brown eyes and brown hair. The American Embassy is actively working with Mexican authorities to try and locate him.

Could a cartel leader be responsible for Harry’s disappearance? From Lohud.com:
Jackie Burrell, a longtime family friend of Devert, and his mother, Ann, said banners hung on Friday throughout the coastal town of La Union by a group known as Pueblos Libres claimed El Tigre, Adrian Reyes Cardenas, was responsible for the death of an American citizen as well as the disappearance of a globetrotter. The globetrotter, Burrell said, is a clear reference to Devert.
Jackie also said other messages conveyed through the Help Find Harry Facebook page supported those claims.
The State Department, the FBI, and Mexican authorities are all investigating.
