The jury has found Bessman Okafor and his co-defendant, Nolan Bernard, guilty on all counts related to a May 2012 home invasion. They were convicted of one count of burglary of a dwelling with a firearm, four counts of robbery with a firearm, and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
The jury deliberated for less than 90 minutes.
After the home invasion, Okafor allegedly broke into a home and killed 19-year-old Alex Zaldivar, one of the key witnesses in the home invasion case. He is expected to go on trial for that murder later next year.
Okafor and Bernard face up to life in prison for the home invasion. Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, October 11.
UPDATE: 10/15/13 11:03 AM
Bessman Okafor and Nolan Bernard both received five concurrent life sentences for the home invasion.
Before they were sentenced, Okafor did not want to speak, but Bernard did. He told the court that his rights were violated when the judge wouldn’t let him be tried separately for the home invasion.
Okafor goes on trial next year for Alex Zaldivar’s murder.
