Search crews in Houston are looking for a missing 17-year-old who was last seen on Valentine’s Day.

Antonio Saldivar borrowed his mom’s Hyundai sedan on that Friday night, telling her that he was going to drop off presents at his girlfriend’s house. He reportedly never made it there, and his wrecked car was found abandoned at an overpass. It was significantly damaged, having crashed into a concrete pillar. Antonio’s shoes were left in the car.

Antonio’s mom told reporters that after Antonio missed his curfew, she started calling his cell phone. He finally picked up the phone at about 4 AM.

She said, “Where are you? You know you’re in trouble.” Antonio said, “Yeah, I know I’m grounded, but I will be there. I’m coming, I’m on my way.”

When he still hadn’t returned home, she tried calling him again but the call went straight to voicemail.

Around 4:50 AM, his car was found.

That’s not the only suspicious aspect of his disappearance though. According to Click 2 Houston, Antonio may have been forced off the road:

Texas EquuSearch volunteers say a witness came forward who says he saw a dark colored SUV hit Antonio’s car and force his car into a concrete pole the night he disappeared. Texas EquuSearch said the witness is willing to talk to Houston Police and to give a statement regarding what they saw.

Antonio’s family is worried that he may have left the crash site, confused and disoriented.

No word yet on where Antonio could have been from the time he left his mother’s house to the time of the accident, which presumably happened after talking to his mother around 4 AM. Everything I’ve come across says he never made it to his girlfriend’s house, so where did he go? Someone must know something, unless he was just driving around aimlessly by himself for all those hours.

Antonio was last seen wearing a purple leopard print hoodie, with a black muscle shirt underneath and tan shorts. He has a tattoo on his left arm of a clown-faced girl and a tattoo outline of Texas with “HOUSTON” in the middle. He is Hispanic, about 5’7, 145 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion.

If you have seen him, please call Houston Police at (713) 731-5223 or Texas EquuSearch at (281) 309-9500.

UPDATE: 2/28/14 9:25 AM

Police have confirmed that they found Antonio’s body in the Houston Ship Channel, about a mile away from where he car was found.

Police had received a tip from a witness who noticed the body of a male was trapped between two barges in the ship channel. Antonio’s family has been notified.

No word yet on the cause or manner of death.

UPDATE: 3/27/14 8:09 AM

Antonio’s family held a press conference yesterday, and said they believe foul play was involved in Antonio’s death, even though Houston police reportedly believe it was an accident.

Antonio’s family said they received a mysterious photo of Antonio’s body floating in the water on the day his body was found. There was a teddy bear stuffed in the crotch of his pants.

The family wants new investigators assigned to Antonio’s case.

Something definitely smells fishy here. I haven’t been able to find any other info about that witness who came forward earlier, saying that they saw Antonio’s car being run off the road, but now with this photo surfacing, it doesn’t really seem like an accidental death.

If it was an accidental death, does that mean that Antonio crashed his car into the pillar, took his shoes off (because remember his shoes were found in his car), and then stuffed the teddy bear down his pants and drowned himself in the water?

It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me for the family to want this case investigated more closely. Antonio was reportedly on his way to a girl’s house to give her a Valentine’s Day present. Was there some sort of love triangle with this girl? Could someone have been angry that Antonio was giving this girl presents?

Not to mention, who in the world sent that picture?
